EV Charging at home

The future is now with EV charging at home. More and more companies such as partners Ohme*, are offering services that make it easy and convenient to install charging stations at home. Below we detail the process from finding the an electric vehicle charger for charging at your home through to installation.

3-pin vs. wall charger

EV charging at home is typically done through a standard 3-pin plug or through a specially installed electric wall mounted charger.

Using your standard 3-pin plug

Due to slower charging speeds through a 3-pin plug, this is best suited for the smaller batteries of plug-in hybrid vehicles. With average charging speeds of 2.3kw for a 3-pin plug, the CUPRA Leon PHEV takes a minimum of 5 hours for a full charge from empty**.

Charging through a wall box

For battery electric vehicles many drivers opt for installation of a home charging solution like the one from Ohme*, our preferred charging partner.

Ohme charging speeds

Ohme chargers offer speeds of up to 7kw in line with most domestic residential properties in the UK can provide.

Using with Wi-Fi and the mobile app

The Ohme charger connects to your home Wi-Fi and can then be controlled with the Ohme mobile app†. The app then allows you to manage charging schedules, monitor progress and keep track of electricity usage and costs.

Smart energy tariffs

New energy tariffs primarily designed for EV drivers, like the one from Octopus Energy^^, incentivise charging during off-peak times by reducing the price of electricity. By telling Ohme your vehicle and your time-of-use energy tariff details, smart functionality will look to charge when prices are lower.

Save up to £350 on your charger installation

The OZEV grant of up to £350 is available for people living in rented properties or homeowners who live in flats. Used towards the cost of a EV chargepoint, Ohme can claim on your behalf.

Lithium-ion batteries, of the type used in most electric vehicles (including CUPRA electric vehicles) have a restricted lifespan. Battery capacity will reduce over time, with use and charging. Reduction in battery capacity will affect the performance of the vehicle, including the range achievable, and may impact resale value. New car performance figures (including battery capacity and range) may be provided for the purposes of comparison between vehicles. You should not rely on new car performance figures (including battery capacity and range), in relation to used vehicles with older batteries, as they will not reflect used vehicle performance in the real world.
